Things to See & Do

Lock 21

Lock 21 is part of the Old Erie Canal Towpath Trail and it is also a component of the active New York State Barge Canal. The trail passes directly over the lock via footbridge, allowing for spectacularly interesting views of this working lock. Ample parking is available here, and there are also picnic tables and public restrooms. This is a popular fishing location, and camping is allowed at this site by the New York State Canal Corporation. More information about all of New York State's Canal Lock sites can be found here: http://www.canals.ny.gov/boating/hours.html

Bellamy Harbor Park

Bellamy Harbor Park is where the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal/Barge Canal meet. The first shovelfuls of earth that became the Erie Canal were dug close to the park.

Visitors on the Empire State Trail will pass through the park, which is a great rest area with bathrooms. Fishing, kayaking and boating are common recreational activities. There is a short walking path at the park as well. Popular festivals such as Locktoberfest in October and Canalfest during the summer are both hosted in the Park.

Mohawk River Trail

The Mohawk Trail is a multi-use 3.8-mile out and back paved trail that follows the Mohawk River. Its southern terminus begins at Bellamy Harbor and extends north to the newly redeveloped Griffiths technology park, which was once an airforce base.

Fort Stanwix

Fort Stanwix is a 1700’s fort built by the British to protect a six mile portage known as the Oneida Carrying Place. The portage connected the local Mohawk River and Wood Creek to the broader Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean. The Fort has a fascinating history and is free to the public. Hours and programming may vary depending on the season. https://www.nps.gov/fost/index.htm
