Purpose

The Old Erie Canal is a historic, recreational, and economic asset. It runs through the downtown core of the Village of Canastota and supports ongoing revitalization efforts. While recent and planned investments are enhancing the Canal’s role as a destination, persistent water quality issues continue to detract from its aesthetic appeal and recreational use. These issues include seasonal algal blooms, excessive aquatic vegetation, sediment accumulation, debris, and odors, particularly during summer months.

To support revitalization goals, Madison County Planning, in coordination with the Village of Canastota, retained Colliers Engineering & Design to evaluate water quality conditions and develop feasible improvement alternatives. This analysis focuses on approximately 1.5 miles of the historic Old Erie Canal within the Village limits, with emphasis on the downtown reach between Main Street and Peterboro Street.
